Range Safety Officer RSO

A Range Safety Officer (RSO) ensures safety on a shooting range by enforcing rules, conducting safety briefings, monitoring all shooter activity, and swiftly correcting unsafe handling, like muzzle control or finger discipline, to prevent accidents. They manage range operations, oversee equipment, handle emergencies, and maintain a safe, orderly environment for everyone. 

Core Responsibilities:

• Enforce Rules: Strictly uphold all range Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and safety rules.

• Monitor Activity: Continuously observe all shooters for unsafe practices and address them immediately.

• Conduct Briefings: Provide mandatory safety orientations and emergency procedures to all users.

• Manage Ceasefires: Call for and enforce ceasing fire instantly when violations occur or emergencies arise.

• Handle Malfunctions: Verbally assist shooters with clearing firearm stoppages and malfunctions.

• Inspect Equipment: Check the range, targets, and user equipment to ensure safety and functionality.

• Manage Entry/Exit: Oversee opening and closing procedures, ensuring safe weapon handling to and from the firing line. 

Key Duties:

• Supervision: Oversee shooting activities and sometimes supervise Assistant Safety Officers (ASOs).

• Communication: Maintain clear communication with range control and shooters.

• Emergency Response: Lead or assist in emergency response and first aid.

• Facility Maintenance: Assist with upkeep of grounds, benches, and target systems.

• Ammunition Control: Ensure proper use and accountability of ammunition. 

Essential Skills & Knowledge:

• Extensive knowledge of firearms, ammunition, and safe handling practices.

• Assertiveness to stop unsafe behavior.

• Strong focus and ability to work in a fast-paced environment. 

In essence, the RSO is the frontline safety authority, ensuring every shooter follows procedures and maintains control, making them crucial for any safe shooting facility.
